You may then discover that being able to perform a task is not the same as being able to perform that task repeatedly for an entire working day.

I also think there is a temptation after stroke to prove that nothing has changed.

You want to demonstrate that you are still capable.

You do not want colleagues watching you.

And you certainly do not want people assuming that a brain injury has made you less intelligent.

So you push.

That can become counterproductive.

If your brain can produce excellent work for four focused hours, forcing another four hours of deteriorating concentration does not prove your capability.

It may simply produce poorer work.

Learning to manage cognitive fatigue is therefore not about becoming less ambitious.

It is about understanding how to get the best performance from the brain you have now while giving recovery the space it needs.

Your working capacity may increase.

Your stamina may improve.
